Trail Test Camp: Our Ultra Trail Shoe Test Roundups

Powered by Finishers and MY TRAILS, the very first Trail Test Camp brought together 20 runners, 10 men and 10 women of all levels, in Le Lioran, Cantal, from May 18 to 21. Their mission was a first: test, compare and independently assess some of the best trail shoes on the market. Behind this ambitious concept was a simple yet radical idea: putting terrain and feel back at the heart of product testing. Based on feedback from these varied profiles, a detailed roundup was produced for every shoe across four categories: Gravel-All Round, Ultra, All Mountain and Race. Here is the second instalment, focused on the Ultra category.

Shoes designed for long hours of effort on varied, non-technical terrain. Trail Ultra shoes prioritise comfort, cushioning and long-term stability, while still providing reliable support as fatigue sets in. They are built to preserve a smooth stride hour after hour, when managing effort becomes essential.


ROUNDUP: ON CLOUDULTRA PRO

โžœ The On Cloudultra Pro sits in the Trail Ultra category as a hybrid model focused on performance and a smooth ride across fast, relatively forgiving trails.

From the first try-on, the shoe stands out for its high level of comfort, helped by a thin tongue that follows the foot's anatomy closely without creating pressure points. The lacing system is a well-executed technical feature: the use of ridged laces keeps the initial tension constant and prevents the fit from loosening during a run. The upper combines a structured, highly breathable mesh for effective temperature regulation, although some testers noted ergonomic issues around the ankle bone or arch, where a slight prominence may be felt depending on foot shape. The internal volume is not excessively snug, allowing a precise fit once the laces are tightened.

On the trail, liveliness and low weight are the model's clear strengths. The foam delivers an effective energy return, helped by a rocker that encourages forward propulsion and makes the shoe particularly efficient on fast, runnable sections. That pursuit of speed comes with a marked lack of stability, identified as a technical limitation by some testers. The shoe tends to roll outward under load, a behaviour that becomes more pronounced on uneven ground and for heavier runners, limiting its use on technical terrain.

In terms of protection, the On Cloudultra Pro delivers a mixed result for an ultra-distance shoe. Some users consider the toe bumper sturdy, but the midsole provides only moderate terrain filtering. The ground feels close beneath the foot, which improves precision in the short term but may offer less protection over many hours. Grip is functional on dry, firm trails, but the lug pattern reaches its limits on wet or loose surfaces, where traction becomes less predictable. The mesh's overall durability was nevertheless confirmed as suitable for regular use.

ROUNDUP: KIPRUN KIPSUMMIT MAX

โžœ The KIPRUN Kipsummit Max is built for extended endurance in the Trail Ultra category, combining generous cushioning with a protective structure for long-distance running.

Straight out of the box, the shoe delivers immediate comfort that most testers compared to a slipper-like feel. Extensive padding around the collar and an especially thick tongue wrap the foot in softness. Internal volume is a major feature, with a very spacious toe box offering complete freedom of movement, although some users described the shoe as cumbersome or even boat-like when standing still. The lacing system holds the initial fit securely, despite recurring comments that the tongue is too short for some testers.

On the move, foot hold and stability are the main areas to watch. Around a third of the feedback pointed to instability and a lack of truly secure lockdown, particularly around the heel and midfoot. This structural flexibility can create a floating sensation during rebound phases or on uncertain footholds, reducing fatigue-fighting support on the most rugged terrain. The thick foam does, however, provide reassuring stability for heel strikers on descents.

Half of the testers identified the ride and its liveliness as strengths. The very soft cushioning provides thorough terrain filtering, with a substantial stack protecting the body from repeated impacts.

The traction and protection review confirms the shoe's all-terrain positioning. The outsole delivers reliable grip through conventional lugs, offering versatility across varied surfaces. Protection is a clear strength, thanks to a large, rigid toe bumper that shields the forefoot from obstacles. The structured, breathable mesh completes this robust package and helps protect the foot over time.

ROUNDUP: ASICS TRABUCO MAX 5

In a static fit test, the ASICS Trabuco Max 5 stands out for its high level of comfort, with testers highlighting the quality of the padding around the collar and upper. The fit offers generous volume, including a wide toe box that allows the foot to adapt naturally during prolonged efforts, although some users found it less precise for narrower feet. Thin, grippy laces provide a secure fit, complemented by an elastic lace keeper on the tongue.

On the trail, the very pronounced forefoot rocker creates a smooth transition and consistent forward drive, helping maintain pace on runnable sections. Combined with a firm foam, this geometry delivers an effective energy return, although the sole profile may feel unstable to runners who land exclusively on the forefoot.

One important point concerns sizing: the model runs small, so sizing up may be necessary to provide the room required for long races. A very thin tongue that rises well over the instep makes entry easier, although some users noted the lack of a dedicated lace pocket.

On the move, the shoe's lively, playful character is its defining feature, endorsed by a large majority of the test team. Despite its substantial sole, the foam delivers an effective energy return and a snappy toe-off, helped by a pronounced rocker that keeps the foot moving smoothly through the stride. This mechanical responsiveness helps maintain a strong pace on runnable sections while continuing to filter out ground irregularities over the hours.

Foot hold and stability were considered exemplary on technical sections. Overall protection is reinforced by a functional toe bumper, although some testers on highly aggressive terrain considered its flexibility a limitation.

The HOKA Speedgoat 7 is an excellent option for athletes who prioritise protecting the body and precise foot placement without sacrificing the responsiveness needed to run efficiently over long distances.



ROUNDUP: KAILAS FUGA EX330

โžœ The KAILAS FUGA EX330 is a technical shoe in the Trail Ultra category that prioritises terrain filtering and protection for long mountain efforts.

The shoe offers immediate step-in comfort, with a close-fitting upper and a snug, slipper-like feel. Its internal construction is relatively narrow, primarily suiting runners with slim feet who want a precise fit, although that narrowness may feel excessively restrictive on other foot shapes. The Quicklace system stabilises the foot effectively, but some testers identified a drawback: tightening it can create uncomfortable pressure across the top of the foot and around the ankle. The narrow, high tongue adds to that initial pressure-point sensation.

On the move, grip and traction are the model's defining strengths. The outsole's thick, pronounced lugs provide dependable traction on loose ground, mud and technical trails. That grip inspires confidence, especially on steep terrain. Protection is another clear strength: the toe bumper handles impacts well, while the structured mesh resists abrasion and protects the foot over time. The thick sole also does an excellent job of filtering out ground irregularities and repeated impacts.

The shoe's ability to pick up the pace is more nuanced because of the density of its sole. Its rigid construction limits liveliness and energy return on flat, runnable sections. Nearly half the testers described the cushioning as firm and the shoe as relatively heavy, making it better suited to a steady pace than an all-out pursuit of speed. The forefoot rocker helps the foot roll through the stride, but the narrow platform can compromise lateral balance on rocky ground, sometimes resulting in insufficient support on uncertain footholds.

This model is aimed at experienced trail runners with slim feet who want a stable, highly protective shoe for ultra-trail distances. The KAILAS FUGA EX330 is at its best on technical, muddy terrain, where its durability and superior grip help maintain secure progress over long hours of running.



ROUNDUP: MERRELL MTL ADAPT MATRYX

The MTL Adapt Matryx feels notably stiff when first put on. The fit is fairly bare-bones, while the very thin tongue, with no comfort padding, demands careful adjustment when lacing up. The round laces require firm tightening to hold the foot securely.

In running, foot hold and stability are the model's main technical weaknesses. The substantial sole, combined with a pronounced rocker profile, creates noticeable lateral instability on uneven ground. Some testers found it difficult to stabilise the ankle, particularly on cambered terrain, reducing foot-placement precision. Runners with slim feet may find the foot sliding inside the shoe, while some considered the toe box overly roomy; others, paradoxically, reported not having enough space for their toes.

In terms of liveliness and cushioning, the Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx behaves unusually for its category. Despite its bulky appearance, the midsole foam is very dense and firm, providing substantial terrain filtering but a distinctly harsh ride. The pronounced front and rear rockers nevertheless help the foot roll through the stride, although the sole's rigidity limits natural energy return. Excellent grip comes from prominent lugs that deliver effective traction on loose ground, while a solid toe bumper and thick upper enhance protection from external impacts.

The Merrell MTL Adapt Matryx is aimed at medium to heavier runners looking for a stable shoe on runnable trails. Because of its stiffness and instability on technical ground, it is better suited to athletes who prioritise maximum terrain filtering over intermediate to long distances rather than ultra-trail racers requiring flexibility and dependable fatigue-resistant lockdown.



ROUNDUP: NEW BALANCE HIERRO V9

In a static test, the shoe stands out for exceptional step-in comfort. Its upper combines soft mesh with a high, heavily padded rear collar that secures the foot. A thick tongue prevents pressure points, although a third of the feedback mentioned some difficulty fine-tuning the lacing, which can feel too elastic or slippery depending on the runner. Internal volume is generous, with a roomy toe box suited to foot swelling over long distances, despite the shoe's imposing appearance when viewed from the outside.

On the move, foot hold and stability are the main technical concerns of this ninth-generation model. A strong trend toward lateral instability emerged, with the foot rolling inward or outward under load. The behaviour, amplified by the high stack, can undermine confidence on technical descents and very uneven ground. Heel hold remains effective, however, thanks to a structured heel counter, while the soft foam's impact absorption was almost unanimously praised.

The Hierro V9 uses pronounced front and rear rockers to create a smooth ride on runnable trails. It provides adequate rebound, but its liveliness is limited by a weight that feels high, reducing responsiveness when accelerating. The large-lug configuration provides dependable traction, including in mud and on loose terrain. A robust, extended toe bumper protects the forefoot from frontal impacts, while the substantial sole effectively neutralises uneven ground. Some testers did note limited mesh ventilation during prolonged efforts.

This model was developed specifically for ultra-trail distances, where protecting the body and maintaining comfort over time matter more than outright speed. The New Balance Hierro V9 is primarily aimed at runners of all builds who want maximum terrain filtering and protective cushioning on varied, relatively non-technical trails at a steady pace.



ROUNDUP: ROSSIGNOL VERCORS

โžœ The Rossignol Vercors is a technical shoe designed for long mountain races, sitting at the crossroads of technical trail running and ultra-distance.

During the fitting, the Vercors felt comfortable and ergonomic, moulding closely to the foot. The thin upper and tongue create a close-to-the-ground feel, although some users noticed initial stiffness. The lacing system holds the foot securely, but a lace keeper would be a welcome addition. A particularly high rear collar and extended heel tab support the Achilles tendon, a feature designed for prolonged efforts. The fit is generally described as close, which may create pressure around the arch for certain foot shapes.

On the move, foot hold and precise foot placement are the Vercors's main strengths. The shoe offers firm stability on uneven ground and rocky terrain, allowing confident technical running. One caveat emerges over very long distances: some testers found that muscle fatigue makes the narrow platform feel less reassuring. The shoe is lively, with firm cushioning providing an effective energy return and an airy stride that differs from the usual highly filtered feel of Trail Ultra shoes.

Grip from the Michelin rubber and robust lugs performs well across a wide range of mountain surfaces. A toe bumper and durable mesh protect the foot, although terrain filtering is a technical limitation for extended endurance. Around a third of testers flagged insufficient forefoot cushioning, leading to fatigue from excessive ground proximity on routes longer than 70 kilometres. That lack of frontal protection is directly linked to the model's focus on precision and low weight.

The Rossignol Vercors is aimed at skilled, well-trained runners, preferably with slim feet, looking for a stable and responsive shoe for medium to long distances. It comes into its own on steep mountain trails and rocky ground, where precision and liveliness take priority over the more generous cushioning required for ultra-trail races beyond 100 kilometres.



ROUNDUP: X-BIONIC TERRASKIN X03

โžœ The X-Bionic Terraskin X03 is a technical shoe in the Trail Ultra category, specifically developed for extended endurance and focused on superior terrain filtering and robust structural protection.

During the fitting, the Terraskin X03 stands out for its flexible mesh and ultra-stretch tongue, which wrap the instep without noticeable friction. The collar design is a limitation, however, identified by more than half of the testers: the rear tab rises too high against the Achilles tendon, creating stiffness as the foot rolls through the stride. The fit has an asymmetric volume, with a snug midfoot once laced but an especially roomy toe box. While that volume benefits long-distance comfort, it can create a floating sensation and reduce precision for runners with slim feet.

On the run, the sole unit's stiffness prioritises stability and long-term protection over natural flexibility. Terrain filtering is excellent, effectively neutralising impacts on technical trails. A pronounced rocker helps offset the foam's rigidity by mechanically guiding the foot forward and easing the transition through the stride.
