ASICS Trabuco 14: Review and verdict
Fourteenth version. It sounds almost ordinary when put like that, but developing 14 iterations of a trail shoe has to mean something. With its iconic Trabuco line, ASICS has managed to get the fundamentals right every time. The Trabuco 14 does not reinvent the wheel, but it remains a dependable choice for trail runners looking for a versatile, reliable shoe. It is stable, grips well and feels comfortable. This time around, it even features a new foam previously found only in the brand's premium road shoes.
From May 18 to 21, 2026, 20 carefully selected testers got to try the ASICS TRABUCO 14 at the first Trail Test Camp, organised by MY TRAILS in partnership with FINISHERS in Le Lioran, Cantal. A fixture alongside trail runners for many years, the TRABUCO is the Japanese brand's iconic trail model. This 14th version comes packed with advanced technologies. With a protective plate and ASICSGRIP technology, the TRABUCO 14 delivers a secure, controlled ride across all kinds of trails, including the most technical and rugged terrain. To maximise comfort at every step, it uses FF BLAST MAX cushioning. It strikes an excellent balance between a soft landing and strong energy return, making it a good fit for runners chasing speed. Finally, its redesigned trail upper holds the foot securely while preserving a broad range of movement, helping runners tackle demanding terrain with ease.
What the Trail Test Camp testers had to say
The Asics Trabuco 14 is a versatile trail shoe aimed at the all-mountain category. It prioritises filtering out the terrain and all-day comfort over outright performance.
From the moment you put it on, the shoe stands out for its high level of step-in comfort, with generous padding around the collar and a thick tongue that effectively protects the instep from pressure points. The slipper-like fit is a defining feature, delivering immediate softness that was endorsed by the vast majority of testers. The flat-lace system provides solid initial lockdown and includes a handy elastic lace garage. The fit is roomy, especially in the toe box, giving wide feet welcome freedom of movement. For runners who prefer a snugger fit, however, that extra volume can create a floating sensation.
On the move, foot hold and stability are the model's main technical limitations. A clear trend emerged around the lack of lateral support, caused by the highly flexible mesh and midsole foam. On technical trails, off-camber sections and rocky ground, the shoe feels noticeably unstable: the heel lacks hold and the foot tends to twist inside the upper. This structural behaviour calls for a slower pace as the terrain becomes more demanding, limiting precise foot placement in high-mountain terrain.
In terms of responsiveness, the ASICS Trabuco 14 favours a smooth transition over a snappy toe-off. The cushioning feels soft and pleasant, but reactivity is moderate, steering the shoe towards a steady-pace style of running. Grip and traction are confirmed strengths, though. The lugs provide reassuring traction across a wide range of surfaces, including muddy ground and wet rock. The toe bumper offers front-end protection, but the thin upper mesh raises questions about durability when exposed to abrasion on technical terrain.
➜ This model is well suited to runners of all sizes looking for a shoe for medium- to long-distance outings on well-formed or rolling trails. Its protective cushioning and high comfort make it a strong choice for runners who prioritise endurance and foot preservation on dry or moderately technical terrain, at the expense of the reactivity and outright stability required on demanding mountain routes.
The ASICS Trabuco 14 stands out for its comfort and accessibility, making it an excellent option for long, regular outings on non-technical terrain. It delivers a pleasant, relaxed ride, particularly well suited to runnable courses where endurance matters more than technical skill. Thanks to its generous cushioning and comfort-focused design, it is a very good choice for runners looking for a reliable shoe that lets them build up the miles without fuss, whether on easy trails or a mix of road and dirt paths. It is therefore better suited to an endurance-trail approach than to committed running on highly technical terrain, and comes into its own on relaxed outings and long-distance runs.
The shoe really surprised me in a good way, especially given its initial appearance. Once you get moving, the energy return is very enjoyable and brings real dynamism to the stride. It is responsive enough while retaining a good level of comfort, with reassuring grip that inspires confidence on the trail. The transition is smooth and lets you gradually pick up the pace without losing stability. In the end, it is a shoe I would happily recommend for medium distances and, more broadly, for endurance outings where you can also let loose on the descents and make the most of the security provided by the outsole.
A comfortable shoe that holds the foot well, with fairly generous cushioning that gives a soft feel on long outings. It offers reliable grip on technical terrain as well as muddier trails, making it a reassuring option in varied conditions. Dynamism takes a back seat to comfort and stability. The heel section protects the foot effectively and adds to the sense of security, particularly on descents. The forefoot, however, could offer a little more protection and hold depending on your needs. I would recommend it for distances of 30 to 60 km, for runners looking above all for comfort and versatility across varied terrain.
Within the ASICS Trail range, the Trabuco is the ultimate all-rounder. Not as maximalist as its big sister, the Trabuco Max, and not as speed-focused as the Metafuji Trail, it is the shoe for runners who want something reliable across varied terrain without overthinking it. The formula has worked pretty well for thirteen generations. The good news with version 14 is that the franchise's philosophy remains unchanged. There are still two or three significant updates, though.
The first is the foam. ASICS has replaced the previous formula, which had featured the familiar GEL technology in the heel for years. It now uses FF Blast Max, the same foam found in the Novablast 5, the brand's best-selling road shoe for everyday runs. It is a genuine change of character: more bounce, more dynamism and a livelier feel underfoot. With 2 mm more stack than the previous version and a 4-gram weight reduction, it is a thoroughly modern update that addresses trail runners' needs. More foam, more protection, more dynamism and fewer grams on the scales.
FF Blast Max: lively foam for greater versatility and comfort on the trails
This is clearly the main selling point of version 14. FF Blast Max was not originally designed for trail running. It comes from ASICS's premium road shoes, the Blast range, where energy and lightness take priority. Bringing it to a trail shoe is a gamble. According to the Japanese brand, it pays off: the shoe is livelier and bouncier than its predecessors, with genuine pop when you pick up the pace. It is also more protective and delivers a notably soft feel underfoot.
A forefoot rock plate completes the package, protecting against rocks and roots. It is split to preserve some lateral flexibility rather than stiffening the entire outsole. On moderate to technical terrain, that is a good compromise.
The new FF Blast Max foam really changes the game. The Trabuco 14 is livelier and lighter than ever. It now delivers more comfort and more dynamism underfoot.
The Trabuco 14 gives you confidence when you do not have any. The shoe is built for the mountains, an ideal partner on technical trails and ultras, with comfort and stability as its strengths. I think this shoe shows some impressive improvements over previous versions. It is 15 g lighter, far more at home on committed singletrack, more agile and more predictable.
A revised fit with more room for your toes
The other notable change in version 14 is the fit. ASICS has reshaped the shoe with a snugger midfoot hold and a wider toe box. Both changes address real-world needs: keeping the foot properly locked down on descents without crushing the toes over long distances. Several testers still felt that the toe box had become almost too generous for narrow feet, with some extra movement on descents. Good lacing and the lace lock should easily solve that issue, though.
For the upper, ASICS has opted for a protective technical mesh, paired with a padded tongue for added comfort that is integrated with the upper. The foot is shielded from debris while maintaining durability and breathability.
ASICSGRIP: seriously effective traction
The ASICSGRIP outsole has been updated and will handle most dry or slightly damp surfaces, from forest paths and gravel to well-worn trails. The 4 mm multidirectional lugs deliver good traction across varied terrain and the confidence needed to run without second-guessing yourself. The broad outsole platform also naturally improves the shoe's stability during the transition through the stride.
The ASICS Trabuco 14 is made for...
► All-round trail runners covering varied terrain
► Road runners looking for their first genuinely dynamic trail shoe
► Fans of previous versions who want more bounce
► Runners who steer clear of mud and truly demanding conditions

The Trabuco 14 is the best version in the model's history. With the new FF Blast Max foam, ASICS is moving away from the somewhat conservative Trabuco of two or three generations ago. For runners looking for a versatile, reliable pair without breaking the bank, it is hard to do better at this price point (€160). And if an athlete such as Ben Dhiman chooses it for technical trails and everyday training, the model is clearly worth a closer look.
