Unveiled quietly at the 2025 SaintéLyon, the fifth-generation ASICS Trabuco Max arrives without any major shake-up. The Japanese brand has refreshed its maximalist trail franchise with an improved upper and a few grams shaved off, keeping the focus on runners who put cushioning first and for whom long distance really starts beyond 50 km.

From May 18 to 21, 2026, 20 carefully selected testers got to try the TRABUCO MAX 5 at the inaugural Trail Test Camp, organised by MY TRAILS in partnership with FINISHERS in Le Lioran, Cantal. The shoe was put through its paces in real-world conditions. It features FF BLAST PLUS cushioning for long-distance comfort, ASICSGRIP technology for reliable traction and control across a wide range of surfaces, and a water-repellent mesh upper that limits water absorption while maintaining excellent breathability, even in wet conditions.

What the Trail Test Camp testers had to say

The ASICS Trabuco Max 5 sits firmly in the Trail-Ultra category as a shoe designed for sustained endurance, with generous cushioning and a pronounced mechanical roll-forward effect.

In hand, the Trabuco Max 5 stands out for its exceptionally comfortable step-in feel. Testers highlighted the quality of the padding around the collar and upper. The fit is roomy, with a wide toe box that gives the foot plenty of space during prolonged efforts, although some users found the hold less precise for narrower feet. The lacing system does its job with thin, grippy laces, complemented by an elastic lace garage on the tongue.

On the trail, the pronounced forefoot rocker delivers smooth transitions and consistent forward momentum, helping runners maintain their pace on faster, more runnable sections. Combined with a firm midsole, this geometry produces an efficient energy return, although it can create a specific feeling of instability for runners whose foot strike is exclusively on the forefoot.

A broad platform provides secure, stable footing and limits unwanted foot movement across varied terrain. The substantial cushioning filters out ground irregularities, helping preserve joint comfort and proprioception over hours of running. There is one caveat: the midsole's overall flexibility. Some testers reported an initially stiff feel during the first few strides.

Traction comes from moderately sized lugs that deliver dependable grip on compacted surfaces, although they can reach their limits on particularly greasy or technical ground. Protection is a clear strength, thanks to a structured toe bumper that acts as a shield against frontal impacts. The mesh is durable and airy, but its breathability is moderate, which may limit heat evacuation during prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

➜ This model is aimed at runners of all sizes looking for maximum cushioning and underfoot protection for ultra-trail distances. It will appeal most to those who prioritise protection and a smooth ride on varied courses, where fatigue management is the key performance factor.

The ASICS Trabuco Max 5 stands out for its excellent overall comfort, particularly thanks to a collar and tongue that feel exceptionally good on the foot. The hold is reassuring, with welcome stability and a slight forward bias that adds some dynamism to the stride. The thin laces make tightening easy while allowing for a precise fit. Despite its understated toe bumper, the shoe offers strong all-round protection and impressive cushioning, making it ideal for long distances and ultra-trail. It is a thoroughly capable ultra shoe, striking an excellent balance between weight, comfort and protection. Ventilation is well judged: the foot feels secure and well supported while benefiting from a breathable, hard-wearing mesh. The upper also inspires confidence with its robust construction, while the comfortable ankle fit reinforces the sense of security over time. The lacing is simple and effective thanks to the thin, grippy laces. On descents, some forefoot discomfort may appear because of the fairly generous toe box, but that extra room also gives the foot more space and freedom on long outings.

The ASICS Trabuco Max 5 delivers excellent energy return from the very first strides, with a particularly enjoyable blend of dynamism and smoothness. The slightly less padded sidewalls contribute to a lighter, freer feel around the foot without compromising overall comfort. The lacing is effective and practical, with a well-designed lace garage keeping everything tidy and secure during the effort. The shoe's geometry naturally encourages a forward-oriented stride, which could be especially appealing to midfoot and forefoot strikers looking for more dynamism. The toe box strikes a good balance, providing both hold and enough room for long-distance comfort. Its performance on highly technical terrain remains to be confirmed, but first impressions point to a capable, enjoyable shoe for fast long outings and ultras.

The ASICS Trabuco Max 5 is particularly well suited to runners looking for a degree of stiffness that delivers stability, dynamism and comfort over long distances. Its reassuring ride and well-balanced structure make it a strong choice for long trail races, from 50 to 70 km and beyond. It is versatile enough for a range of runners, whether light, average-sized or heavier, thanks to its stable platform and protective cushioning. On the trail, the shoe inspires confidence with excellent stability, allowing you to stack up the kilometres while maintaining an efficient, comfortable stride.

Some shoes launch with enormous advertising budgets behind them. Others simply do not need the fuss. The Trabuco Max belongs in the latter category. Since the first versions, this model has never needed to overdo things. It has established itself as a go-to choice among ultra runners who love long distances. The Trabuco Max 5 follows that same path: no revolution, just meticulous work on what already made the model what it is.

Choosing the SaintéLyon for its unveiling was no accident. It is a long, demanding night race over varied but not excessively technical terrain. In other words, exactly this shoe's natural playground. Asics knows its audience well.

A completely reworked upper

Asics was under pressure after the v4's mesh proved a little too fragile, and that is where the main changes in version 5 are concentrated. The new water-repellent mesh is a clear step forward from previous generations: it lets air through to prevent overheating on long outings while keeping moisture at bay through muddy sections and stream crossings. The shoe dries faster, and the foot stays dry for longer. On a night ultra in changing conditions, that kind of detail can make a real difference to overall comfort.

The upper has also been reinforced in key areas, notably around the toes and along the sides, without adding weight. In fact, the Trabuco Max 5 is around 13 grams lighter than its predecessor. That is not a dramatic figure on paper, but combined with the other updates, it contributes to a livelier, lighter overall feel.

➜ A 39 mm heel stack, more durable mesh, and a generous midsole that does not collapse even after five hours on the trails. That is the Trabuco Max's central argument.

FF BLAST PLUS: cushioning built to last

At the heart of the shoe is its FF BLAST PLUS foam. Asics is not changing what works. With a 39 mm heel stack, this is firmly a maximalist shoe. Visually, the midsole almost gives the shoe a liner-like presence on the foot. But what sets this foam apart from some of its rivals is its ability to retain its properties over time. It is not designed to deliver explosive bounce in the first few strides. It is designed to remain effective after four or five hours of running, when your legs have already absorbed a serious workload.

GUIDESOLE technology completes the package with a pronounced rocker that encourages a natural roll through the stride. In practical terms, it reduces ankle flexion and takes some load off the calves on long, runnable sections. That is a significant advantage when the goal is to save energy over several dozen kilometres. The 5 mm drop works in the same direction.

Grip for varied terrain

The ASICSGRIP outsole provides solid traction across most trail surfaces: steep climbs, wet forest paths and sandy trails. The spaced-out lugs help shed debris and prevent the outsole from clogging on muddy ground. This is not a shoe for ultra-technical ridgelines and extreme rocky sections, but for ultra and long-distance courses on runnable to moderately technical terrain, the grip is more than up to the task.

The Trabuco Max 5 is made for…

► Trail runners preparing for ultras or long outings of more than 30–40 km

► Runners who prioritise comfort and joint protection over outright speed

► Runners looking for a reliable shoe on varied but not extreme terrain

► Heavier runners or those returning to training who need generous cushioning

The Trabuco Max 5 does not reinvent the wheel, and that is probably its greatest strength. Asics simply listened to what ultra runners were asking for and refined the model accordingly. A more durable upper, a few grams less, and the same foam that holds up over time. For long distances, its generous cushioning will be especially appreciated by runners who love piling on the miles.
