In the mountains of Frozen Head, Tennessee, the Barkley Marathons has become a unique benchmark in the world of ultratrail running. Its deliberately unmarked course consists of five loops of approximately 20 miles each, to be completed in under 60 hours. There is no GPS to guide runners here: each participant must navigate with a map and compass through steep slopes, dense undergrowth, and off-trail sections. Along the course, books hidden in the forest serve as checkpoints, with runners required to tear out pages to prove they passed through.
The terrain of Frozen Head alternates between brutal climbs, technical descents, and dense vegetation, with elevation gain far exceeding that of a typical ultra. The race is also known for its deliberately mysterious format and traditions, such as the start being given after its creator, Gary Cantrell, lights a cigarette. A shortened version, the Fun Run, allows participants to complete three loops within a 40-hour limit. Since its creation in 1986, the Barkley has rarely seen a runner complete all five loops, further cementing the legend of this extraordinary race.
