Ultra Trail des Montagnes du Jura 2026: nearly 9,000 trail runners already in

From October 1 to 4, 2026, the Ultra Trail des Montagnes du Jura (UTMJ) will bring thousands of trail lovers together across Ain, Jura, Doubs and Switzerland. One month out from its seventh edition, 9,000 runners are already signed up across the different races, underlining the buzz around an event that’s doubled down on a popular, accessible trail festival rooted in its home turf. The youngest runners will be in on the action too, with UTMJ Kids already bringing together more than 2,200 children across 22 schools and clubs.

After a 2025 edition that drew 10,261 entries and 8,549 starters, the UTMJ’s race caps are filling up fast: La Renarde (75 km, 2,600 m D+) is already sold out, La Lynx (20 km, 800 m D+) is 97% full and La Chamois (10 km, 400 m D+) 88%. La Franco-Suisse (105 km, 4,000 m D+) and the CMM (40 km, 1,100 m D+) are already at 80%, while the UTMJ (175 km, 7,000 m D+) and the UTMJ Relay are sitting at 71%.

This seventh edition will also come with a major new sporting addition: La Jurassienne, a 300 km, 12,400 m D+ race run exclusively as a relay, in teams of 4 to 6 runners. A full crossing of the Jura massif, from Hauteville-Lompnes in Ain to Métabief in Doubs, spanning three departments, two regions and two countries.

From the 10K to this new 300 km adventure, from UTMJ Kids to ultra-distance races, solo or relay, UTMJ holds on to what makes it different: bringing every generation and every level together, from young runners to champions and everyday trail runners, for a sporting and human experience in the heart of the Montagnes du Jura.

Two countries, two regions and three departments crossed

In just a handful of editions, the Ultra Trail des Montagnes du Jura has carved out its place among the key dates on France’s trail calendar.

Its DNA hasn’t changed: to put on an event open to everyone, able to bring together ultra specialists, experienced trail runners, weekend warriors, families and young athletes through a wide range of formats and distances.

UTMJ is also a way to experience the sheer variety of the region, with a race weekend that spans two countries (France and Switzerland), two regions (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) and three departments: Ain, Doubs and Jura. It also threads through a few legendary villages like Les Rousses, Mouthe or La Chapelle-des-Bois, major hubs for Jura cross-country skiing in winter.

Beyond the racing, the event has become a big weekend for the area. In 2025, between 25,000 and 30,000 spectators lined the courses over the weekend. More than 1,000 volunteers, many from local sports and cultural associations, help keep the races running smoothly and welcome participants every year. The organization also wants to keep growth under control to protect the quality of the experience and the environment. Courses are designed in coordination with state services to avoid sensitive areas and limit the event’s impact on the Jura massif.

Métabief, the beating heart of the event for four days

All UTMJ races share one common finish point: Métabief, in Doubs, where every finish line will be. The resort will also host, on Saturday October 3, the various races and the UTMJ Kids grand finale. Throughout the event, Métabief will be buzzing to the rhythm of UTMJ with a partner and expo village, entertainment, concerts, bars and food stands, award ceremonies, and live TV coverage to follow the races and the weekend’s highlights. A true hub for runners, supporters and spectators, extending the experience well beyond the race itself.
