In Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley, the Grindstone Running Festival by UTMB takes runners into the heart of the Appalachian forests. The trails alternate between wooded sections, technical paths and more open stretches across the mountains, with terrain shaped by a series of climbs and descents. The course passes through the George Washington National Forest, a vast natural area known for its rugged landscapes.
The start and finish take place near the limestone chimneys of Natural Chimneys, an iconic site in the region. Several race formats offer the chance to discover this environment, from a short trail race to the 100-mile ultra. In September, Virginia's forests also begin to take on their autumn colors. This is a race that combines mountainous terrain, wide-open spaces and an immersive experience in the Appalachian landscapes.
