In Auburn, California, the Canyons Endurance Runs by UTMB take runners through the landscapes of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The trails follow the canyons of the American River, cross oak and pine forests, and feature a succession of climbs and descents, some of them particularly steep. Several sections are directly associated with the legend of the Western States, including Devil’s Thumb, Swinging Bridge, and No Hands Bridge. The finish in Auburn’s historic downtown is another reminder that the city is closely linked to the history of American ultrarunning. The various courses therefore follow sections of the Western States Trail, ranging from short trail distances to the 100-mile ultra. It is a race that offers the chance to discover California’s landscapes while following in the footsteps of one of the great names in ultra-endurance.
