Review: The North Face Offtrail Ultra, a trail shoe built for adventure
Since last August, The North Face has been offering a colorful trail shoe designed for the most demanding adventures: the Offtrail Ultra. We have spent the past few weeks putting it through its paces, from heatwave conditions to the first autumn rains.
“A lightweight, highly responsive trail shoe designed for athletes seeking speed, precision and confidence on the most technical terrain.” That is how The North Face describes its new Offtrail Ultra, unveiled last August as part of the Summit Trail Run collection.
This is a next-generation mountain running shoe, but without a carbon plate, whose value in trail running remains a matter of debate.
What is not up for debate, however, is the need for a certain level of comfort as the distance increases and the terrain becomes more technical. Nor is responsiveness, which helps spare the joints over ultra distances.
The Offtrail Ultra appears to meet those demands head-on, thanks to its dual-density midsole built around the nitrogen-infused DREAMBOUND™ super foam. The setup is designed to deliver welcome comfort, bounce and responsiveness on technical trails.
On the trail, that highly cushioned, responsive feel is apparent from the very first strides. It feels as though you are running on velvet, conserving energy whether you are crossing heat-baked, bone-dry ground or wetter, muddier terrain.
Built on that secure, comfortable platform, the shoe adds a lightweight upper and snug fit, both valuable when muscles and joints have to absorb thousands of strides over tens or even hundreds of kilometers. At a remarkably low weight for this category, the Offtrail Ultra soon fades into the background as the miles tick by.
A model driven by simplicity and function
Its integrated sock-like gaiter means your foot can work securely, forming a close unit with the upper and footbed. Make sure you choose the right size, though, so the gaiter does not gape and let trail debris in.
With 5 mm lugs, perhaps slightly too deep, mounted on the SURFACE CTRL G2 outsole, the shoe rarely puts a foot wrong when it comes to unwanted slips and tackles every surface with confidence. The added bonus is a few centimeters of extra grip at the toe, providing more confidence on rocky ground.
The elastic lacing system is equally simple, but entirely functional. It is quick and precise to adjust, and the laces can be tucked away easily, even with numb fingers, under a horizontal elastic strap on the upper. And when the clocks go back, the eye-catching colors will help keep you visible on the trails.
The only question mark, at first glance, is the relatively light protection around the toe box for a shoe intended for ultra distances. More miles will tell, particularly on repeated rocky, technical courses where the forefoot can take a serious beating.
“In a world where shoes can sometimes be over-engineered, the Offtrail Ultra stands out for its simplicityZach Miller, a The North Face athlete who knows a thing or two about restraint and ultras, having spent years running without a GPS watch.
There is no carbon plate and no oversized stack on this model, even if its overall look follows current trends. Instead, it offers a clean, functional design built for natural movement in the mountains, bringing together speed and comfort in a compact package. Its agility and durability are the only open questions when faced with the demands of ultra-distance terrain.
