Every spring since 2008, EcoTrail Paris has drawn trail runners from across Greater Paris and beyond to explore the paths and hills of western Paris. This year, the organisers are breaking new ground with an autumn edition offering three distances: 20 km, 50 km and 80 km. Here is what to expect just days before the inaugural event.

On Saturday, October 17, nearly 6,000 runners will take on the courses of the Salomon EcoTrail Paris autumn edition. It is a first for a race traditionally held in early March, now duplicated, or almost, in the autumn from this year onwards.

Three new courses, completely different from the spring routes

This new event will offer participants three formats, with courses and start and finish venues entirely different from those used in spring:

  • A 20 km / 200 m elevation gain, with 2,400 entries, starting at 9 a.m. sharp in the grounds of Haras de Jardy, a peaceful haven tucked away in the Hauts-de-Seine.

  • A 50 km / 550 m elevation gain (2,300 entries), following a scenic route between city and countryside and setting off from the Domaine National du Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye at around 9:15 a.m.

  • An 80 km / 1,000 m elevation gain race for 919 entrants, offering a one-of-a-kind adventure through some of western Paris's most iconic sites. The start is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. at the Domaine National du Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, followed by a crossing of the Domaine de Marly and a passage through Haras de Jardy before the finish at the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud.

After hours of racing, all participants will converge on a single finish in the leafy grounds of the Domaine National de Saint-Cloud. The organisers unfortunately had to change the routes and some start and finish venues at the last minute after failing to secure authorisation for the courses originally planned, particularly around the city of Cergy. But the essentials remain: on the edge of Paris, runners will still discover rich landscapes, with the field made up largely of residents of the Île-de-France region (86%).

An accessible event with a younger, more female field

The Salomon EcoTrail Paris autumn edition is another sign that trail-running fields are getting younger and more gender-balanced: the average age of entrants is 38, while more than one in five participants in the three races is a woman (28%).

Nearly 30% of registered runners live within Paris itself, further proof that trail running appeals even in the heart of the city. It reflects the values behind the event, which the organisers see as a gateway into the discipline without requiring runners to travel across France, whatever their background or experience.
